REFLECTIONS

Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Exodus 20:8

Have you seen the new Honda commercial featuring Ferris Bueller … I mean … Matthew Broderick? In the commercial, Matthew skips a day of work in order to get in a little “me” time. Interestingly, right before I saw the ad (on the computer … as I was procrastinating …) I read an article by Jonah Lehrer in Wired magazine that made me feel a little bit better about both clicking on a random Honda ad (rather than doing my work) and the whole concept of being a slacker.

Lehrer’s article talks about a study where 112 students were given two minutes to create as many solutions as possible to the problem of how to improve the experience of waiting in a line. After the two minutes, half of the group was told to evaluate their ideas. The other half played an unrelated video game for two minutes, giving their brains a short respite.

Interestingly, while both groups came up with the same number of ideas, there was a huge difference in terms of how well they recognized good ideas. As Lehrer explains in the article:

[G]iving the unconscious a few minutes...proved to be a big advantage, as those who had been distracted were much better at identifying their best ideas. (An independent panel of experts scored all of the ideas.) While those in the conscious condition only picked their most innovative concepts about 20 percent of the time -- they confused their genius with their mediocrity -- those who had been distracted located their best ideas about 55 percent o0f the time. In other words, they were twice as good at figuring out which concepts deserved more attention.

It was also found in this study that if you pause your work (rest) by doing something you enjoy, you will return to the task even better. The apparent lesson of this test: Rest and joy are needed in order to survive and thrive.

So … the next time you feel that you are slacking when you stop your paper or homework or math problems to play a video game or check Facebook or even just to close your eyes for a few minutes – remember – you are taking a small break in order to maximize your potential.

God even built a day of rest into creation – thank you, God, for the sabbath!

Ferris Bueller – you knew it all along.
